How to Manage Migraines with Naturopathic Interventions

Migraines are so debilitating. They’re painful, unpredictable, and can really impact our quality of life negatively. From the aura, to the nausea, to the light and noise sensitivity, to the throbbing sensations, migraines are deeply unpleasant. Luckily, there are so many Naturopathic interventions that can support you in preventing and managing both acute and chronic migraines. Over the years, I’ve gathered a ton of helpful research-backed tips and tricks for holistically managing migraines that I’d love to share with you in this post.

Herbs that alleviate migraines:

Ginger:

Ginger can reduce both the pain and nausea associated with migraines.

Feverfew:

Feverfew can both prevent and treat migraines. Studies show that feverfew may reduce the number of migraines in chronic migraine sufferers.

Butterbur:

Butterbur can reduce the frequency and severity of migraines.

Nutrients That Alleviate Migraines:

Vitamin B2:

Riboflavin can reduce the frequency, duration, and intensity of migraine attacks.

Magnesium:

Magnesium can significantly alleviate acute migraines and lower the likelihood of having chronic migraines.

COQ10:

COq10 is a powerful antioxidant that protects against migraines and reduces the frequency and severity of migraine attacks.

Diet & Lifestyle Practices That Alleviate Migraines

Hydrotherapy:

Hydrotherapy alters your blood & lymphatic flow, causing your blood vessels to open or constrict, depending on water temperature. A 2016 study showed that a warm foot bath in combination with a cold head compress can significantly reduce the frequency and intensity of headaches.

Acupressure:

There are many excellent acupressure points for relieving migraines, including LI4 (located on the web between your thumb and index finger), and Yin tang (located midway between your eyebrows).

Avoid dietary triggers:

There are many known dietary triggers for migraines. Paying attention to how your body reacts to certain foods will give you important insights on what works or doesn't work for you. Common migraine triggers include alcohol, chocolate, cultured dairy products, nuts, yeast extract, cured meats, MSG, artificial sweeteners, and nitrate/nitrite containing food preservatives.
